GTA 6 Age Ratings Leak Through PlayStation Ads: PEGI 18 Confirmed, Mysterious X18+ Gets Pulled

GTA 6 Age Ratings Leak Through PlayStation Ads: PEGI 18 Confirmed, Mysterious X18+ Gets Pulled

Grand Theft Auto 6 now has age ratings — sort of. PlayStation advertisements that began running on September 26 quietly revealed regional classifications for GTA 6 across Australia, Europe, Germany and Mexico, and the PEGI 18 label has since appeared directly on the game’s PlayStation Store page. But it’s the Australian rating that set the internet on fire: an X18+ Restricted badge — a classification Australia normally reserves for adult films. Hours later, PlayStation pulled the ad.

What the PlayStation ads showed

GTAVice.net spotted the ratings while examining PlayStation’s Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition advertisements running across Meta’s platforms — Facebook and Instagram — beginning September 26. The classifications seen so far:

  • Australia: X 18+
  • Europe / United Kingdom: PEGI 18
  • Germany: USK 18
  • Mexico: D

Around the same time, the PEGI 18 classification also appeared directly on GTA 6’s official PlayStation Store listing, where it had previously been marked as “PEGI 18 Provisional.” That’s a meaningful shift: provisional ratings are placeholders, and their replacement with a final badge suggests the paperwork behind GTA 6’s European launch is being finalized.

One important caveat runs through all of this. None of these ratings have been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games. They’ve been spotted in Sony’s advertising and storefront listings — not announced by Rockstar or the ratings boards themselves, as GTAVice is careful to note.

The X18+ mystery — and why it’s almost certainly a mistake

The Australian X18+ badge is the bombshell of this story, and almost certainly an error. Under Australia’s classification system, X18+ is legally restricted to pornographic films — video games top out at R18+. A game carrying an X18+ classification would be a legal impossibility, and a commercial disaster: X18+ material can only be sold in two Australian territories and cannot be advertised in most of the country.

GTA V, for reference, was classified R18+ in Australia — the highest rating a game can actually receive there.

The rumor mill ran in the opposite direction first. A viral X post from @GameTaleAR on September 29 claimed the X18+ badge meant GTA 6 could contain explicit sexual content, and copycat graphics — some of them outright fake collages — spread across Facebook and Instagram within hours. Australia’s official classification database, meanwhile, lists no final GTA 6 classification matching the X18+ claim, and PlayStation’s own Australian page states the game’s age rating is unconfirmed.

Then the evidence vanished. As of 1 PM ET on September 29, PlayStation had removed the Australian Ultimate Edition advertisement featuring the X18+ rating, according to GTAVice’s updated reporting. The most likely explanation is the boring one: someone on the ad-operations side grabbed the wrong Australian classification tile when assembling the regional creatives.

What IS solid: PEGI 18, USK 18 and Mexico’s D

Strip away the X18+ noise and the picture looks exactly like you’d expect. PEGI 18 for Europe and the UK, USK 18 for Germany, and an adults-only D rating in Mexico — all visible in PlayStation’s ads and, for PEGI, on the store page itself. Notebookcheck notes these classifications line up closely with GTA V, hinting the sequel depicts similar levels of violence, drug use and nudity.

One notable absence: North America. The ESRB is still silent on GTA 6 despite the November 19 launch being just seven weeks away, while Xbox’s storefront lists only a “pending determination of Likely Mature 17+.” Given the series’ history, an M for Mature rating is a formality — but the board hasn’t stamped it yet.

What this means

Ratings surfacing in advertising is one of the most reliable “the launch is really happening” signals in gaming. It means marketing materials are being localized, legal boxes are being ticked, and storefront metadata is being finalized. Seven weeks out from November 19, everything points to the date holding firm.

For Australian players, the practical takeaway isn’t the X18+ drama — it’s the new age-verification regime waiting for them. Under Australia’s 2026 online-safety rules, games rated 18+ require age verification on the Xbox and PlayStation storefronts, and Insider Gaming reports Rockstar could face civil penalties of up to $49.5 million per breach for non-compliance. Expect GTA 6 to land at R18+ — the same bucket as GTA V — once the official classification drops.

Bottom line: GTA 6 will be an 18+ game just about everywhere. The ads answered the real question — how each region stamps it — and the one stamp that looked shocking turned out to be the one that vanished within hours.

Rockstar hasn’t commented on the ratings, and we don’t expect them to — publishers rarely announce classifications before the boards do. But with the PEGI 18 badge now sitting on the PlayStation Store page, the grown-up stamp on GTA 6 is effectively official, even if the paperwork isn’t quite finished.
