Home›News›GTA 6 Online Won’t Launch Until 2027, Twitch CEO Reveals After Rockstar Talks

The first public timeline for GTA VI’s online mode didn’t come from Rockstar. It came from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, who told Bloomberg that Grand Theft Auto VI’s multiplayer will launch in 2027 — more than a year after the single-player game arrives on November 19, 2026.
The remark landed during a wide-ranging interview at Tokyo Game Show in mid-September about how Twitch is bracing for what Clancy expects to be the biggest event in the platform’s history. And because Clancy says his team has spent “a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans,” it is the most concrete online-mode timeline anyone has put on record.
Important framing up front: Rockstar has not confirmed any of this. The studio has never announced a GTA VI multiplayer mode, a name for it, a business model, or a release date. Clancy’s comment is a well-placed outsider’s read, not an official commitment — but given who said it, where he said it, and what he claims to have discussed with Rockstar, it’s worth taking seriously.
The quote that set off the coverage
Speaking to Bloomberg, Clancy explained that Twitch has been working directly with Rockstar on how the studio can engage creators around launch. Then he described two distinct viewership surges he expects on the platform:
“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
The interview took place in September 2026, so “next year” points squarely at 2027. Note the verb: launch — not “maybe launch.” Clancy speaks with the confidence of someone who has seen the internal roadmap, which is exactly why outlets from Hypebeast to Gadgets360 to Rockstar Report picked it up immediately.
Clancy also admitted he has no idea just how big the initial GTA VI viewership bump will be. That honesty, ironically, makes the multiplayer claim sound more credible: he’s not inflating the first surge, yet he’s certain about a second, bigger one the following year.
Why this fits what Rockstar has (and hasn’t) said
Here’s the thing — Clancy’s timeline aligns perfectly with Rockstar’s silence. Every piece of marketing so far has sold GTA VI as a single-player experience: the two trailers, the Extended Look premiere on Netflix, the pre-order announcement, and the pricing details all revolve around Jason and Lucia’s story in Leonida. There is no multiplayer product page, no “GTA VI Online” branding, and no hint of an online mode in any official channel.
Rockstar describing GTA VI as a single-player experience at launch is not the same as saying multiplayer doesn’t exist. It’s the same playbook the studio has used before: announce the story first, talk about online later — on their own schedule, not ours.
The history: how long did online take last time?
If 2027 sounds far away, the precedent is mixed:
- GTA V → GTA Online: barely two weeks. The online mode dropped on October 1, 2013, just 14 days after the base game. A disastrously rough two weeks, for those who remember the servers melting — but a fast turnaround.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 → Red Dead Online: roughly seven months. The beta rolled out at the end of November 2018, after an October launch, with the full release following in May 2019.
A 2027 window for GTA VI multiplayer lands closer to the Red Dead model than the GTA V one. If Rockstar launches online in, say, the back half of 2027, that’s roughly 9–13 months after the November 19, 2026 single-player release. Long enough to let the story mode dominate the conversation (and the awards season) before the online juggernaut begins.
GTA Online isn’t going anywhere
The other notable piece of news came on the same day as Clancy’s interview. At Take-Two Interactive’s annual shareholder meeting on September 17, CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that GTA 6 is a single-player title and that GTA Online will continue to receive support after the Grand Theft Auto VI release and beyond.
That matters because GTA Online is still an enormous business. Take-Two reported that recurrent consumer spending remained strong through 2026, driven in large part by the current online mode. Killing off a healthy revenue stream to rush a successor would make no business sense — and the shareholder meeting remark confirms Take-Two isn’t planning to.
Whether GTA VI’s online mode eventually replaces GTA Online or runs alongside it is still unknown. Take-Two gave no roadmap for how the two would coexist. But the message is clear: fans with established characters, businesses, and garages in Los Santos don’t need to panic. Their empire survives past November.
What this means for players
Put the pieces together and the launch strategy starts to look deliberate rather than delayed. Rockstar gets a clean, story-driven launch on November 19, 2026 — with pre-loading from November 12 — and avoids splitting its audience (and its servers) between a massive single-player release and a multiplayer beta at the same time.
Then, sometime in 2027, the second wave hits: the online mode that will dominate Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok for years. Clancy is betting on it — he’s forecasting an even bigger viewership bump than the launch itself. If he’s right, Rockstar has effectively built a two-act launch: one cinematic event in 2026, and one endless one in 2027.
For now, though, the caution stands: this is a Twitch executive’s expectation based on conversations with Rockstar, not a Rockstar announcement. Until the studio puts a date on it, treat 2027 as the strongest hint we’ve got — not a date to circle in pen.
That said, when the person running the world’s biggest game-streaming platform tells you what Rockstar told him to expect, you listen.
