GTA 6 Map: The 6 Regions of Leonida Explained

GTA 6 Map: The 6 Regions of Leonida Explained
Concept art — an AI-generated panorama of Leonida's six regions.

Update — October 14, 2026: A handwritten GameStop store sign claims GTA 6’s physical (code-in-box) edition includes a physical collector’s map — Rockstar has not confirmed it. Read our full collector’s map rumor breakdown.

✅ CONFIRMED

Rockstar has finally put the numbers on GTA 6’s world — and it’s enormous. In Game Informer’s cover story (issue 382, digital edition September 29, 2026), Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed that the state of Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, split across six distinct regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Quick answer: GTA 6’s map is the state of Leonida, about twice as big as GTA 5’s San Andreas and denser, with far more enterable interiors. Its six confirmed regions are Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. The map ships at launch on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Key takeaways

  • GTA 6’s Leonida is Rockstar’s biggest world by “some degree” — roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, per Aaron Garbut in Game Informer issue 382.
  • The map is split into six named regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
  • Rockstar’s priority is density, not just size: far more interiors, with “a hand-crafted quality to every bit,” Garbut said.
  • Each region has its own identity — neon beaches, swamps, dying tourist towns, refineries and a national park all sit inside one state.
  • The map ships with localized persistent weather, 170+ wildlife species and a huge side-activity list at launch on November 19, 2026.

How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, and Rockstar says it’s denser as well as bigger. Co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer (issue 382, September 29, 2026) that GTA 6 is Rockstar’s biggest world by “some degree,” calling it about twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5’s San Andreas — and, notably, that raw size is not even the headline. “We obsessed about every part — the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors,” Garbut said.

Garbut framed the whole project as a refusal to compromise: “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way — everything is dialed up — detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density. I don’t think we have ever created anything close to this before.” He described Leonida as “a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit,” built as one connected environment rather than separate areas that feel disconnected. One outlet’s roundup put it even more aggressively, suggesting Leonida could rival GTA 5’s map and Red Dead Redemption 2’s world combined — but Garbut himself only committed to the roughly-2x GTA 5 figure, so treat anything beyond that as speculation. What are the six regions of Leonida?

The six confirmed regions are Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. That’s the official breakdown Rockstar gave Game Informer — and it’s worth keeping it separate from fan-made maps: community projects (including our own interactive Leonida atlas) use their own county names, but these six are the only regions Rockstar has confirmed by name.

The spread is deliberately varied. Rockstar says Leonida moves between neon beaches, wetlands, dying tourist towns, industrial sprawl and a national park inside one state — senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries told Game Informer that “this game and its stories really thrive in an environment where you have rich people and poor people right next door to each other. And crime and corruption are the thread that pulls everyone together.” The region table below gives the full confirmed picture at a glance:

RegionReal-world inspirationWhat Rockstar saysBest for
Vice CityMiamiCompletely rebuilt and expanded; Art Deco architecture, beaches, a major cruise-ship portCity crime, nightlife, story missions
Leonida KeysThe Florida KeysIsland-chain region along the southern coastBoating, jet skiing, beach escapes
GrassriversThe EvergladesExpansive biodiverse wetland, reptilian predators and “questionably friendly, probably armed outdoorsmen”Air boating, hunting, bass fishing
Port GellhornDeclining Florida tourist townsStruggling corner of the state — cheap motels, rundown strip malls, barren tourist attractionsSeedy side jobs, exploration
AmbrosiaIndustrial Florida heartland“The heart of Leonida” — factories, refineries, and a local biker gang with real pullGang territory, industrial heists
Mount Kalaga National ParkFlorida-Georgia border countryNorthern edge of the state; wildlife thrives here, with the most dangerous animalsHunting, motocross, ATV trails

What’s in Vice City?

Vice City is back as GTA 6’s urban center — completely rebuilt and expanded for a modern setting. Game Informer describes Art Deco architecture, beaches and a major cruise-ship port, and the new screenshots lean into the nightlife: one shows Jason being pursued through the city while another frames the coastline with Jason and Lucia relaxing on the beach.

This is the Vice City fans remember, but modernized: a metropolis where Rockstar’s obsessive interior count matters most. Garbut’s “rooftops, alleys, internals” quote was explicitly about making buildings feel real inside and out, and that’s a city promise more than a swamp one. The city is also where the cruise-ship port sits — one more launch point for the maritime side of Leonida, from smuggling routes to island-hopping in the Keys.

What are the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers and Port Gellhorn?

The Leonida Keys mirror the real Florida Keys — a chain of islands off the southern coast — while Grassrivers is GTA 6’s take on the Everglades: an expansive, biodiverse wetland full of reptilian predators and, in GamingBolt’s memorable phrasing of the Game Informer material, “questionably friendly, probably armed outdoorsmen.” Port Gellhorn is the other end of the Florida dream: a struggling region of cheap motels, rundown strip malls and barren tourist attractions, modeled on the state’s declining vacation towns.

These three regions are where Rockstar’s activity list comes alive. Expect air boating and bass fishing in the Grassrivers, jet skiing and scuba diving around the Keys, and in Port Gellhorn the kind of faded-roadside-Florida mood that GTA has always turned into satire gold — abandoned attractions begging to be raided, photographed or burned down in a mission. The Grassrivers’ wildlife danger also ties directly into the 170+ animal species confirmed for GTA 6, with hunting confirmed as a returning activity.

What’s in Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park?

Ambrosia is what Rockstar calls the heart of Leonida — its industrial side, packed with factories and refineries, and home to a local biker gang with significant influence. That gang is the First Chapter, and one of the Game Informer screenshots shows Jason being pursued by its members in Ambrosia, with their hangout the Thirsty Wolf biker bar. Expect this to be mission-critical territory.

Mount Kalaga National Park sits on Leonida’s northern edge, along the Leonida-Gloriana boundary — the game’s stand-in for the Florida-Georgia line. Environment art vice president Paul MacPherson said the team researched Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and smaller rural towns to build it: lumber operations, communities with private airstrips and struggling west-coast towns shaped this stretch. Wildlife thrives here more than anywhere, so expect the most dangerous animals — and the ATV trails, mud parks, motocross and mountain biking that go with the terrain. It’s the rural counterweight to Vice City’s neon.

What can you do across the GTA 6 map?

A lot. The confirmed side-activity list so far runs from air boating, base jumping, billiards and gyms to kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos and jet skiing — and Game Informer’s wider coverage adds ATV trails, mud parks, demolition derbies, mountain biking and motocross, farms and ranches, golf, bass fishing, hunting, fishing, scuba diving and zoo visits. That’s already beyond what GTA 5 shipped with.

The world systems matter as much as the checklist. Rockstar VP of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd said the studio re-engineered the weather system so it’s localized and persistent — clear skies in one part of the map, heavy rain a short distance away, with rain that creates rainbows and leaves puddles behind long after it stops. See our GTA 6 weather system: hurricanes and storms explained. And with 170 animal species — 60 bird types, 30 land mammals — plus pet, feed and study mechanics and a sighting compendium, the map is designed to reward slow exploration as much as chaos. Getting caught out in the wilds will presumably work the same way it does downtown — the evidence-based police system watches everywhere.

What hasn’t Rockstar included in the GTA 6 map?

Two honest caveats. First: no Orlando and no theme parks. Paul MacPherson told Game Informer that GTA 6 skips Orlando, Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and the Space Coast — “we don’t have Disney World,” as he put it — because Rockstar selects landscapes to serve the game rather than reproducing every real location. Florida’s parody fun lands on smaller targets instead (Fred’s Pictures, alligator parks, the “Psycho Park” theme park rumor died with the Fairyland fan-map theory). More in our no Disney World in GTA 6 piece.

Second: the missing islands. Back in September, dataminers found unannounced island names — Sanbars, the Crude Islands, Dra and Beld — on the Collector’s Edition poster’s map artwork, and Rockstar quietly scrubbed them from the poster’s online images. That tells us two things: the poster map was an edited, older or incomplete view of Leonida, and Rockstar is still guarding unrevealed geography. We covered that in the island-names-removed story. Treat any “full map” fan render circulating online as unconfirmed until Rockstar shows its hand — which it will have to do, fully, on November 19, 2026.

What this means

The six-region structure is Rockstar’s answer to the oldest open-world criticism: bigger but emptier. By naming Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga as distinct places with distinct economies — cruise ports, swamps, dead malls, refineries, national parks — Rockstar is promising a map where moving 20 minutes across the state actually changes the game you’re playing. Humphries’ line about rich people and poor people living “right next door to each other” is the thesis: Leonida’s variety is narrative fuel, and “the job of the game’s story is to bring the player around the map in a way that feels authentic.”

For launch prep, the practical takeaways are simpler: this is a map that will reward early exploration — hunting and sighting mechanics, Snapmatic photography (one of seven confirmed phone apps) and region-specific activities all point that way. Frequently asked questions

How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

Roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s San Andreas — and denser, with far more enterable interiors. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed the ~2x figure in Game Informer’s cover story (issue 382, September 29, 2026).

What are the six regions of the GTA 6 map?

Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. These are the only six regions Rockstar has confirmed by name; fan maps use their own county names and may differ.

Is Vice City in GTA 6?

Yes — Vice City returns as GTA 6’s urban center, completely rebuilt and expanded for a modern setting, with Art Deco architecture, beaches and a cruise-ship port.

Will GTA 6 have hurricanes and dynamic weather?

Yes. Rockstar re-engineered its weather system so it’s localized and persistent — rain in one part of the map while another stays clear — and the Game Informer coverage confirms dynamic storms, rainbows and lingering puddles. See our weather system explainer.

When can I explore the GTA 6 map?

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading opens November 12 for pre-orders.
