Home›News›GTA 6 Sales Forecast: Will It Really Sell 45 Million Copies at Launch?

✅ CONFIRMED — as published analyst forecasts and survey findings, not official Rockstar or Take-Two sales figures.
Analysts keep raising the bar for Grand Theft Auto VI. A Piper Sandler survey of about 9,000 teenagers, published November 2, found roughly seven in ten PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners intend to buy the game — and the firm still expects more than 45 million copies sold at launch. Take-Two’s earnings call on Monday, November 9, is the first reality check for those numbers.
Quick answer: Piper Sandler’s survey of about 9,000 teenagers found roughly 70% of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners intend to buy GTA 6, and the firm still expects more than 45 million copies sold at launch. Other forecasts range from 31 million in the launch quarter to 51 million in launch week — all estimates, not Rockstar figures.
Key takeaways
- Piper Sandler’s survey of about 9,000 teenagers found roughly 70% of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners intend to buy GTA 6, with more than half planning to buy at launch.
- The firm maintained its expectation of more than 45 million copies sold at launch, reiterating its Overweight rating and $290 price target on Take-Two.
- Other forecasts differ by window, not demand: Newzoo sees about 51 million copies in launch week; Wedbush models about 31 million in the launch quarter.
- Real demand backs the hype: Sensor Tower estimates 7.71 million digital pre-orders worth $751 million, and Circana recorded a record 29% purchase intent.
- Take-Two has never published a GTA 6 unit forecast — its only guidance is $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion in fiscal 2027 net bookings, for the whole company.
What did the Piper Sandler teen survey actually find?
The survey of about 9,000 teenagers, published November 2, found roughly seven in ten respondents who own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S/X intend to buy GTA 6, with more than half planning to buy at launch and 15% expecting to wait a few months. About 90% of prospective buyers said they intend to play the online component.
Analyst James Callahan highlighted the online upside: about 40% of prospective buyers plan additional in-game purchases, which the firm estimates means an initial paying-user rate of approximately 44% for GTA Online — the recurring revenue Take-Two is counting on after launch week. The firm also flagged its own caveat: around 21% of the newer-generation consoles represented were owned by teenagers with both platforms, shrinking the addressable market. Even so, it held the 45-million expectation, reiterated Overweight and a $290 price target, and Take-Two shares edged up around 1.5% that Monday.
How does 45 million compare with the other launch forecasts?
Piper Sandler’s 45 million is a launch-day figure, and it sits in the middle of the published range. Newzoo’s central scenario puts launch-week sales at about 51 million copies worth roughly $4.5 billion, while Wedbush models about 31 million units across the whole launch quarter — different windows, not disagreements.
Newzoo, estimating in July 2026, put launch-week sales at $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion, with a central case of about $4.5 billion — roughly 51 million copies at an assumed average price of $88. Wedbush, in its November 5 preview, projected about 31 million units in the launch quarter at a net realised price of $62.50 per copy, supporting quarterly net bookings of $3.437 billion. Morgan Stanley’s Matthew Cost has modelled roughly 40 million copies in fiscal 2027, to March 2027 — only the first four months after launch.
| Firm | Forecast | Window | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piper Sandler | 45 million+ copies | Launch (day one) | Teen survey of ~9,000 + subreddit-traffic model; reiterated Nov 2 |
| Newzoo | ~51 million copies / ~$4.5 billion | Launch week | Spending model at ~$88 average price; range $3.3–5.2 billion |
| Wedbush | ~31 million copies | Launch quarter | $62.50 net realised price; $3.437 billion quarterly bookings |
| Morgan Stanley | ~40 million copies | Fiscal 2027 (to Mar 2027) | First ~4 months after launch |
| Sensor Tower | 7.71 million pre-orders / $751 million | Pre-launch (to Nov 3) | Digital pre-order tracker — actuals, not a forecast |
What are fans actually buying right now?
The hard numbers so far are pre-orders, not sales. Sensor Tower’s tracker put GTA 6 at about 7.71 million digital pre-orders worth roughly $751 million as of November 3, with 74% on PlayStation 5 and 26% on Xbox — figures we covered in detail in our GTA 6 pre-orders tracker.
Intent data points the same way. Circana’s PlayerPulse tracker recorded 29% purchase intent among US console and PC gamers — the highest for any game in the firm’s tracking history — and advisor Mat Piscatella called the release “a rare cultural and commercial moment for the video game industry.” We covered that record in our Circana purchase-intent report. For scale, GTA V made $1 billion in its first three days in 2013 — about $1.44 billion in September 2026 dollars, per BitsFromBytes Research. At $79.99, 45 million copies would be worth roughly $3.6 billion before special editions and extras.
Why do the forecasts disagree by 20 million copies?
Because they measure different things over different windows with different price assumptions. A day-one figure, a launch-week figure and a launch-quarter figure can all be right at once — and the gap between Wedbush’s $62.50 net realised price and Newzoo’s $88 average price alone moves the unit math by millions.
Three honest reasons to discount every number a little: survey intent overstates purchases, since a teenager saying they plan to buy is not a transaction; the models disagree on price, with the $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate editions, regional pricing and the digital-physical split all changing average revenue per copy; and none of these firms has Take-Two’s data — Sensor Tower’s pre-order counts are the only near-real-time signal, and they exclude physical reservations.
What has Take-Two itself actually said?
Take-Two has never published a GTA 6 unit forecast. Its only hard guidance is fiscal 2027 net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, reiterated on August 7, 2026 and built around the November 19 launch — a dollar figure for the whole company, not a copy count for one game.
The next checkpoint is Monday, November 9, when Take-Two reports second-quarter fiscal 2027 results after the market closes, with a call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Our Take-Two earnings checkpoint explains what the call can and cannot tell you: the reported quarter ended September 30, so no launch sales will appear — the signal is whether management holds full-year guidance and what CEO Strauss Zelnick says about pre-orders. Wedbush’s fiscal 2027 projection of $8.605 billion already sits above management’s range, while BTIG’s Clark Lampen cut his price target to $262 from $313 on November 5, keeping a Buy rating but citing softer mobile data.
What this means
Read the forecasts as a consensus about demand, not a bet on one number. Record purchase intent, record pre-orders and seven-in-ten teen console owners saying they will buy all point the same way — the disagreement is about windows and prices, not about whether GTA 6 will be enormous. The only numbers that settle it are Take-Two’s own: held guidance on November 9, then launch-quarter results in February 2027.
For players, nothing in the forecasts changes the plan: the GTA 6 release date of November 19, 2026 is locked on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, pre-loading opens November 10 and needs up to 212 GB, and editions run $79.99 Standard to $99.99 Ultimate. This article is not investment advice; analyst targets and forecasts quoted here are opinions and estimates, not company guidance.
