Home›News›GTA 6 Regional Editions Spotted: Will Some Countries Get a Censored Version?

Rockstar’s own store backend just handed the rumour mill fresh fuel. Dataminer Ben, known online as videotech, has spotted around seven new regional edition codes for the physical PlayStation 5 version of GTA 6 inside Rockstar’s commerce platform — and the discovery has fans asking an uncomfortable question: could some countries end up with a censored version of the game?
What videotech actually found
If the name rings a bell, it’s because videotech is the same dataminer who caught Rockstar quietly scrubbing unannounced island names from the Collector’s Edition poster earlier this month — a find we covered in detail here.
This time he was digging through Rockstar’s Xsolla commerce backend — the system powering the Rockstar Store — when he surfaced roughly seven new region-specific product codes for GTA 6’s physical PS5 SKU. The codes spotted so far include DUT for the Netherlands/Dutch region, UAE for the United Arab Emirates and AUS for Australia, with corroborating reports also listing Portugal, Switzerland, New Zealand and India.
Equally telling is what appears to be missing: parts of the EU, the UK and even the US don’t show up on the standard dispatch list attached to these codes, which are marked for dispatch starting November 12 — the same day digital pre-loading opens, exactly one week before launch.
Videotech’s own interpretation is measured: the codes most likely exist to accommodate varying age ratings across territories. Notebookcheck, which reported the find on September 26, frames it the same way — while stressing that the codes’ exact significance is still unclear.
Why fans are worried about censorship
This is where speculation begins — but it isn’t baseless. Different countries draw very different lines on violence, drug use, gambling and nudity, and Grand Theft Auto has collided with those lines repeatedly over the years.
The obvious precedent is Japan. Several GTA entries were altered for the Japanese market; in GTA 5, the edits targeted depictions of scantily clad characters and prostitution. Japan is already a special case for GTA 6: unlike every other region, physical PS5 codes sold there expire 170 days after the November 19 release date — a quirk tied to local regulations that forced Rockstar to add a disclaimer to its own website.
Rockstar’s store carries a broader warning too, noting that “platform policies, regional regulations, and age ratings” may prohibit sales outright. Sure enough, pre-orders are already unavailable in several Middle Eastern nations.
Then there’s the ratings silence. With roughly seven weeks until launch, organisations like the ESRB still haven’t published a rating for GTA 6. That’s not unusual this far out, but it means nobody outside Rockstar knows exactly what the raters played through — or what they asked to change.
The calmer explanation: it might just be paperwork
Before anyone panics, there’s a far less dramatic reading — and community posters have already made it. The new codes may exist purely to satisfy regional requirements for product descriptions, packaging and tax labelling. A different SKU in a store backend doesn’t automatically mean a different game in the box — or rather, in the download code, since GTA 6’s physical edition ships as a code in a box rather than a pressed disc.
Some context helps. Rockstar already sells GTA 6 through region-locked PS5 download codes, with published redemption groups covering Brazil, LATAM, North America, Korea, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia & UAE, Rest of Asia and Rest of EMEA — while Xbox codes carry no such restriction. Regional segmentation of GTA 6 sales, in other words, is old news. What’s new is the suggestion that the segmentation could extend to the content itself.
So the honest summary is this: the codes are real, spotted in Rockstar’s own backend. Region-specific content cuts are not confirmed — they’re one interpretation of the data, and Rockstar hasn’t commented.
What this means for you
A few practical takeaways while we wait for official word:
- If you’re buying in the Netherlands, the UAE, Australia, Portugal, Switzerland, New Zealand or India, your copy may technically be a different regional SKU. That alone doesn’t mean content is missing — but it’s worth keeping an eye on.
- PS5 buyers should make sure their PSN account region matches where they purchase: GTA 6’s PS5 codes are region-locked, and a code from the wrong group may refuse to redeem.
- Picking up the physical edition in Japan? Redeem that code within 170 days of November 19, or it expires.
- And the silver lining: this kind of backend activity — new SKUs, dispatch dates, regional compliance work — is exactly what a launch running on schedule looks like. If Rockstar were about to delay GTA 6 again, this isn’t the storefront busywork you’d expect to see. The November 19 date looks safer, not shakier.
Fifty-two days out from launch, the regional picture should sharpen soon — ratings boards typically publish in the final stretch, and their rulings will reveal whether any territory is getting a toned-down Leonida. We’ll update this story the moment a board decision or a Rockstar statement lands.
